Jail Taskforce
In November 2018 the Houghton County Board of Commissioners placed a proposal on the ballot to fund an addition to the Houghton County Jail. Due to the age of the current jail along with inadequate space for housing inmates and Sheriff's services, the Board has been discussing the need to replace the current jail since 1983. That proposal however, along with proposals in 2000 and 2010 were defeated. The loss at the ballot box however did not eliminate the need for the construction of a new jail for Houghton County.
In an effort to gain a better understanding of what Houghton County residents are thinking about the different options that are available regarding the jail, the Houghton County Board of Commissioners voted to form a taskforce to look at the issue. It was the Commissioners' goal that the taskforce include individuals from every township, village and city within the County along with individuals from various civic and other groups. The Taskforce has since been formed and held their first meeting at the Houghton County Courthouse on May 28, 2019.
