County Drain Commissioner issues Soil
Erosion and Sedimentation Control (SESC)
Permits for landowners in Houghton County.
Earth changes that are located within 500
feet of a lake or stream and earth changes
that are one acre or more in surface area
require a permit. Permit applications are
available at the Drain Commissioner’s
Office, the Houghton County Building
Department, or can be downloaded from the
following link.
The Drain
Commissioner also administers "the Drain
Code of 1956" and related statutes. The
establishment of drainage districts and
inland lake levels are part of the Drain
Commissioner’s responsibility. For more
