2025 Jail Project

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners placed a proposal on the August 2025 election ballot to fund the construction of a new county jail facility. The urgency replace the current facility was based on factors including but not limited to, aging infrastructure, lack of space, high  inmate population, and more importantly the safety of the staff, the public and inmates.

A jail committee was formed which included local community leaders, elected officials, Sheriff’s Office staff, Courthouse staff, and civilian organizations which include neighbors of the Sharon Ave. property and the League of Women Voters.
