2026 Jail Project Industry Day
Houghton County Jail Committee
will hold a meeting (“Industry Day”) at Franklin
Township Hall, 49850 US Hwy 41 Hancock, MI on Wed. July
15, 2026 at 5:00 p.m. to receive input on the design and
construction of a new jail and sheriff’s office. The
meeting is open to the public.
The County is
seeking rough order of magnitude (ROM) estimates of the
cost for building a jail and sheriff’s office at the
county-owned property at 19741 Sharon Av. in Houghton.
The new facility shall have space for no fewer than 60
inmates (up to 70) and shall contain working spaces
sufficient in size for serving that number of inmates.
The facility is subject to the Michigan Department of
Corrections regulations for building jails.
Builders and contractors are invited to learn about the
project by reviewing the documents posted
here. Firms
interested in participating in Industry Day may register
at
https://forms.office.com/g/u5Dvxd8ybd. Registration
is requested but not required.
This is an
Informational Market Research Event — not a mandatory
pre-bid meeting. Attendance is voluntary and is not
required to participate in any future solicitation. No
contract will be awarded as a result of this event, and
the County is gathering information only to support
planning for a potential November 2026 funding measure. On May 13, 2025, the Houghton
County Board of Commissioners placed a proposal on the
August ballot to fund a new Houghton County Jail. The new
facility was to be built on a County-owned Sharon Avenue
property that was until recently the home of the First
Apostolic Lutheran Church. That proposal was defeated.
